CALTCM: What is the background of your training, practice setting, and how many years have you been in practice? Dr. Xiong: I trained as an internist and psychiatrist, with CMD. I used to work primarily in inpatient settings and now primarily work in subacute and post-acute settings. I have been in practice for nearly 20 years since residency training. CALTCM: What are you passionate about in long-term care? How are you pursuing your passion? Dr. Xiong: I enjoy working collaboratively with patients and healthcare professionals of all disciplines. I love learning from others, including patients, families, and students. I enjoy getting input from them. To put this in practice, I try to ask them for advice on how they would solve various problems. Most of the challenges in healthcare come from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, social, and economic factors. As a clinician, administrator, and advocate, I get to contribute in meaningful ways to improve patients’ well-being and hopefully make minute changes to our healthcare system. CALTCM: What advice would you give to a new graduate contemplating a career in long-term care? Dr. Xiong: The post-acute and long-term care setting allows you to teach, learn, and care about others. It is a rich and fulfilling career filled with opportunities for personal growth. Enjoy every minute of it! CALTCM: What additional training do you wish you had that may help with your current practice? Dr. Xiong: Communication skills. Dr. Xiong: CALTCM was one of the first organizations that I joined early in my career when I started part-time work (10%) in the SNF setting. I knew it was the right home for me because the members (regardless of background and training/certification) “get it” when it comes to providing complex care to one of the most marginalized population in our society---those with various physical, cognitive, and behavioral disabilities that depend on others to take care of them. Members, and the organization, have served as the guiding light in some of the most challenging times (e.g. covid pandemic). They have been my role models and colleagues. CALTCM has been a great place for me to network, learning, and grow. |
