Review of the 2019 Fall Summit

On Saturday, October 19, the California Association of Long-Term Care Medicine (CALTCM) hosted our 2019 Fall Summit “The Best of the 2019 CALTCM Summit for Excellence,” focusing on engaging nursing home direct-care practitioners with updates on best practices, education on PDPM and immersion in expert-led discussions about ‘hot topics’ in long-term care.

As chair of CALTCM’s Education Committee, it was my pleasure (and plenty of fun!) to emcee the event, meet and introduce our amazing guest speakers; Indu Subramanian, MD; Jason Close, BS, RRT, and Robert Gibson, PhD, JD.  They spoke on Managing Parkinson’s in the SNF, Advancements in Telehealth, and Trauma-Informed Care, respectively.

I particularly found Dr. Subramanian’s presentation insightful; it included useful information for non-pharmacologic treatment for Parkinson’s disease like yoga and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).  I’d be impressed if attendees took those recommendations and created a yoga or mindfulness program for their residents!

A sincere thank you to all who attended the Fall Summit--especially to those folks who attended my “In the Trenches” breakout session on Antibiotic Stewardship!

My favorite aspect about being involved in CALTCM is the community. If you had a delightful time and left the event with a good idea or two, please spread the word and tell your friends and colleagues about our program.

CALTCM members can view the program syllabus of this event and many others on the CALTCM Member page (must be logged in to view).

My best,

Michelle Eslami, MD, FACP, CMD
Chair, CALTCM Education Committee
Professor Emeritus of Geriatric Medicine, UCLA
Chief Medical Officer, Rockport Healthcare Services
