Advancing Geriatric Care: A New Certification Program for Consultant Pharmacists

As the population of older adults continues to grow, the field of geriatric care is undergoing significant transformation. With these changes comes a pressing need for healthcare professionals—particularly pharmacists—to receive specialized training that equips them to meet the unique and complex needs of this vulnerable population.

In response to this need, a dedicated team of pharmacists has developed a new CSHP Geriatric Consultant Pharmacist Certification Program. This innovative program is specifically designed for consultant pharmacists practicing in long-term care and other geriatric-focused healthcare settings. It aims to bridge critical knowledge gaps and support the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.

The certification curriculum provides in-depth instruction on age-related physiological changes, the management of polypharmacy, and the legal and ethical considerations specific to geriatric care. In addition, it emphasizes the development of essential communication skills that empower pharmacists to educate patients and caregivers, collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams, and advocate for safe, appropriate medication use.

By completing this certification, pharmacists will be better prepared to enhance therapeutic outcomes for older adults, reduce medication-related complications, and contribute meaningfully to the overall quality of geriatric healthcare delivery.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine (CALTCM) for their instrumental partnership in this initiative. Their contribution to the educational content of the program has helped ensure that the curriculum reflects a true interdisciplinary approach—an essential element in the care of older adults.
