Course Description and Objectives

In this course, part of an applied research project, Dr. John F. Schnelle, director of the Vanderbilt Center on Quality of Aging and a nationally recognized expert on nursing home incontinence care, will teach you how to conduct an evidence-base toileting trial and use the results to individual incontinence care for residents.   At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct a best-practice toileting trial, in accordance with new toileting items on the MDS 3.0
  • Assess residents’ preferences for incontinence care, in accordance with surveyor guidelines and principals of person-directed care
  • Conduct prompted voiding, a restorative management strategy that has been shown to significantly reduce wet episodes among responsive incontinent residents
  • Target incontinence care so that residents receive individualized services that are feasible for staff to provide

The course features a series of 6 webinars, each 40 minutes long, held over 3 months, with follow-up coaching calls from project staff. Over the course, participants will learn how to conduct an evidence-based toileting trial and will also receive ongoing support and assistance to implement this recommended care practice. Online training materials and the assessment forms needed to implement best-practice toileting trials will be provided.
