A Brief Update About Exciting Roles for the Policy and Professional Services Committee in the Strategic Growth of CALTCM
by John H. Fullerton, MD, CMD, FACP, AGSF, FAAHPM

CALTCM Vice President and Co-Chair of the Policy & Professional Services Committee

In addition to the historical duties of the PPSC, CALTCM is utilizing PPSC members to forge strategic relationships with the California Association of Healthcare Facilities [CAHF], the California Coalition for Culture Change [CCCC], and other key partners and co-stakeholders within our state.

For example, CAHF's membership (since 1950) is comprised of over 1250 long-term care (LTC) healthcare facilities which serve a wide spectrum of post-acute care needs state-wide.  Karl Steinberg, MD, CMD [Co-Chair of the PPSC of CALTCM] has been instrumental as the principal liaison as a member of CAHF’s Government Relations Committee and in his role as Vice Chair of the Quality Subcommittee at CAHF.

Dr. Steinberg and many other CALTCM leaders have given of their time to give presentations at CAHF offerings, and will continue to do this--including the Quality Symposia that we are co-sponsoring with CAHF and Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG) in August and September.  As the industry side of the LTC coin to CALTCM's multi-disciplinary team approach in CA, CALTCM anticipates ongoing benefits from CAHF's impressive resources: including, legislative, regulatory advocacy, extensive third party relationships, and co-promotion of LTC and staff training.

As a continuation of this exciting theme for CALTCM, I have accepted a collaborative position on the Board of Director's [B.O.D.'s] of the California Coalition for Culture Change [CCCC].  On the heels of generous CDPH and CMS grants to CCCC for common goals in "Dementia Collaboration", we, at CALTCM, are enthusiastic to have CCCC State funding shared by CCCC with CALTCM to support our collaborative educational efforts to improve dementia care in LTC.

As other strategic partners have been identified by CALTCM (as well as co-stakeholders), we have become re-energized at the level of our PPSC (as well as in other areas of our foundation) about prospects for additional strategic participation and added LTC "reach" within CALTCM.
