Program Overview

CALTCM is proud to present the Infection Preventionist Orientation Program. This “on-demand” program is specifically targeted to infection preventionist nurses, however all who have a leadership role in infection prevention in a long term care setting will benefit. Infection Preventionists, Directors of Nursing, Assistant Directors of Nursing, Directors of Staff Development and more will have the opportunity to learn directly from an important leader in the field of infection prevention in long term care setting, Dolly Greene, RN, BSN, CIC. The CALTCM Infection Preventionist Orientation Program provides all the foundational information an Infection Preventionist needs to get started in their role through four (4) training modules.

  • Module 1 – Infection Preventionist Duties and Outcome Surveillance (1:08 min)
  • Module 2 – Process Surveillance and Antibiotic Stewardship (45 min)
  • Module 3 – Occupational Health & Immunization Program (43 min)
  • Module 4 – Infection Preventionist Resources and Tools (25 min)

The modules can be completed independently by the Infection Preventionist or viewed in conjunction with a supervisor to supplement other orientation activities. Nursing home leaders (DON, Nurse Consultant or IP Consultants) can utilize the Infection Preventionist Orientation Checklist and all supplemental training materials to include in their onboarding activities.

The “on-demand” education can be played at any time and all resource materials are available for download or printed use. The full program must be completed within 30 days from start of program.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Gain understanding of the Infection Preventionist roles and responsibilities to run a comprehensive Infection Prevention & Control Program;
  2. Utilize an Infection Preventionist Orientation Checklist of components to be reviewed upon hire;
  3. Apply core outcome surveillance forms and tools;
  4. Understand the process surveillance system for validating infection control practices;
  5. Understand when to use McGeer Criteria and Loeb Criteria;
  6. Adhere to occupational health management standards; and
  7. Utilize key resources for Infection Preventionists in long term care settings.

Target Audience

Infection Preventionists are the primary target audience, however additional staff such as, Directors of Nursing, Assistant Infection Preventionist, Assistant Director of Nursing, and Directors of Staff Development will all benefit from the program as many IP activities are shared amongst these staff members.

Board of Registered Nursing (BRN): The California Association of Long Term Care Medicine (CALTCM) is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider #CEP-16690). This activity has been approved for 3.0 contact hours.
