The 38th Annual UCLA Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine and Board Review will take place September 14-17, 2022. This four-day virtual course is designed for health professionals interested in advancing their knowledge and enhancing their ability to care for older adults, as well as physicians preparing for certification or recertification examinations in Geriatric Medicine. The Intensive Course is CME and ACPE accredited and a nationally recognized premier course. 

This premier course, taught by the excellent faculty of UCLA, provides a unique opportunity to have the core of geriatrics delivered in a nicely organized sequence over 4 days. It consists of 8 half-days each dedicated to one of the following themes: General Principles of aging; Falls and Musculoskeletal issues; Medical Issues in older patients(parts I&II); Cardiovascular conditions, common geriatric syndromes; Geriatric Neurology and Psychiatry (parts I&II). For those who plan to sit for Board exams, the course offers 3 live board review sessions curated by faculty. Another unique feature of this course,  are  the live Q&A sessions following the lectures. These sessions provide an opportunity to ask questions and get answers as well as, iron out any controversies.

This year’s course features two keynote speakers:  Dr. VJ Periyakoil, an expert in Palliative care,  whose talk will explore the Impact of Unconscious Bias on Care of Older Adults.  The second keynote speaker is Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, a nationally renowned expert in Neurology and Neurobehavior, and a mentor of mine, who will be discussing Alzheimer’s Disease: Drug Development and the Changing Therapeutic Landscape. The course provides 40 other presentations and 3 board review sessions by experienced speakers. 

Additionally, the UCLA Division of Geriatrics is excited to honor the recipients of the inaugural Drs. Dan and Erna Osterweil award. The recipients of this award for innovation in Geriatric care and Dementia care, are four nurse practitioners who have implemented the Alzheimer’s and Dementia care program at UCLA.  It is of note that two of the awardees, Kemi Reeves and Leslie Evertson, have been members of CALTCM. I am particularly proud of their achievement given that both have worked with me as employees of Valley Geriatric Medical Group; for both, this was their first job after graduating from NP school. We have been serving residents at the Jewish Homes For Aging in Reseda, and other LTC institutions in the San Fernando Valley.  

The content and structure of the course are well-suited for health professionals who desire flexibility, by allowing access up to 4 weeks at the conclusion of the course.
